Rey Mysterio Jr. Story:
Rey Mysterio Jr. was trained by his uncle in Tijuana in the same training camp that producedKonnan and Pysicosis. After two years of intensive training, he made his professional debut as El Colibri (the Hummingbird) on April 30th, 1989 at the age of 14. He honed his craft for the next 3 years on his uncle's shows in Tijuana and on the Southern California indy scene. He dropped out of high school at 17 to focus on his wrestling career. In 1992 he was signed by the AAA promotion where he first gained national exposure. It was there that he changed his name to Rey Mysterio Jr., (King of Mystery). Rey gained widespread critical acclaim in Mexico for his feuds with Pysicosis and Juventud Guerrera, exchanging the WWA Welterweight title several times amongst them. With his daredevil style and suicidal moves, Rey was being compared to legendary Japanese wrestler Tiger Mask. He went to ECW where he had unforgettable matches with Pysicosis and Guerrera and frequently toured with the Japanese WAR promotion. Mysterio made his WCW debut in June of 1996 at the Great American Bash pay-per-view, losing to WCW Cruiserweight champ Dean Malenko. Rey redeemed himself a month later, winning his first of four cruiserweight titles from Malenko on Nitro. Rey put the cruiserweight division on the map having outstanding matches with Malenko, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho and his old Rivals Pysicosis and Guerrera. At Halloween Havoc '97, Mysterio averted tragedy by defeating Eddie Guerrero, the cruiserweight champ at the time, in a mask vs title match. Rey wasn't so fortunate at SuperBrawl this year, losing his mask in a tag match. Rey soon fought with Billy Kidman, beating him they later became tag team partners defeating Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit for the World Tag Team title and defending it from Raven and Saturn.
